Acts of Greatness

In the fall of 2013, I read in a student newspaper about the lack of educational awards for LGBTQ youth. As a queer man, I know the unique challenges of growing up LGBTQ. Confidence is critical to living our best lives; your community's support helps you feel empowered. I decided to fund a one-time award for local LGBTQ high school students attending post-secondary school.

It felt great to be giving back to my community. I met so many inspirational people during this first project. I knew I had to start looking for more long-term ways to support the LGBTQ community. And so Acts of Greatness was born.

Launched in January 2014, Acts of Greatness was a non-profit that offered community awards to LGBTQ youth that celebrated their accomplishments and commitment to bettering the LGBTQ community. We shared these acts of greatness happening in our communities every day so they could inspire others to do even greater acts.

Though the organization stopped operating in 2021, I still want to amplify the stories of our champions and continue to speak loudly about their achievements.

Being who you were born to be is true empowerment. And showing up and being yourself is indeed an act of greatness.

Here’s to all those folks.
